Top 10 Best Ways To Really Save the Planet
If you're like us, you look around often and think: "Wow, this planet is awesome! I'm so glad I live on Planet Earth." Unfortunately, there are some people who don't think that and would rather live on Mars. Those people actually exist and they suck, in our humble opinion. Planet Earth has everything! It's got dolphins, rainbows, kittens, unicorns (maybe not unicorns)... nice beaches, all the best bars, and all our friends and family live here too. It's worth saving, don't you think?
It can seem really depressing and hopeless sometimes when you see people messing it up, nobody seems to care and the other blogs just say... don't forget your reusable shopping bag and use a paper straw... Well, that might help but what can we really do as average people to actually make a significant difference?
To answer this question, we didn't just make sh!t up. We asked ChatGPT and pressed it again and again with some well crafted prompts. The response we got? Well, you probably can't handle the truth. This blog post is going to get a little provocative and controversial. Move along if you don't want to be offended. This is the no bullsh!t top ten list and it might get a little spicy. Please keep reading though if you truly care about Mother Earth. Here's a Top 10 Best Ways to Really Save the Planet list, starting from effective, to most effective:
Top 10 Best Ways to Really Save the Planet
1. Educate and Advocate: Just reading a post like this is where you start- knowing and acknowledging that there's a problem and committing to learning and doing something about it. You have to believe that it all starts with the individual, like the butterfly effect. Stay informed about environmental issues and advocate for stronger policies and regulations that hold people accountable. To advocate, we mean that you do what you can within your circle of influence -tell your friends and families because if you can't hold them accountable then you can't hold corporations and governments accountable either.
2. Vote for Environmentalist Leaders: Participate in elections by supporting candidates and policies that prioritize environmental sustainability and climate action. Your vote can (theoretically) influence political agendas significantly. This point should be listed as the most effective thing, however we all know the system is rigged and in many places our vote doesn't actually count. Vote (Democrat) anyway. Yeah we said it.
3. Vote With Your Dollars: Support ethical businesses and choose to buy from companies that prioritize sustainable practices and ethical sourcing over profit. Be aware of "greenwashing" and don't let companies fool you as they exploit the problem. Your purchasing power can encourage corporate responsibility. Support companies that are trying to create practical solutions, even if they seem insignificant. Some for profit companies may even be certified B- Corps, which is pretty cool. Remember the butterfly effect, it all starts somewhere and small actions do add up.
4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Choose Sustainable Materials: The problem with Capitalism is that it has created this materialistic world of never ending consumption. You don't need all this new crap! Try to minimize all the new unnecessary things in your life. Prioritize quality over quantity and choose things that will last and that you'll want to take care of. Fix things that are broken and buy from companies that stand by their products with a good warranty and offer to fix things when they break. Find new uses for things when you've used it for it's intended purpose. Not everything needs to be made out of plastic. Plastic is made from fossil fuels and poisons the planet when it's disposed of and breaks down.
5. Conserve Resources: Until our leaders and their corporate puppet masters develop alternative energy for the world, unfortunately we still rely on fossil fuels to power and heat our homes and move us and the stuff we buy around. Dinosaurs are dead for a reason. If only it were so simple to not drive or fly? If you have a private jet, please get rid of it. Trade your motor yacht for a sailing yacht. Do you really need a big gas guzzling truck? We're not saying buy a swasticar, those have issues too, but maybe get some exercise and walk instead of drive whenever you can. In some places water is in short supply and distributing it requires the burning of a lot of fossil fuels. We're lucky in Hawaii we get a lot of rain and sun to power solar panels but some other places aren't as lucky. Buy local produce whenever you can. If you're in Hawaii, trust me Hawaii grown avocados taste better than ones shipped in from Mexico.
6. Support (Some) Environmental Organizations: As individuals, our impact may be limited but we can help magnify the efforts of certain groups that are actually effective and doing things to help save the environment. If you have money in the bank, please consider donating it to groups that will put it to good use. Be careful though! There are a lot of groups out there that say they're helping the environment but some may be doing more harm than good by being ineffective or corrupt and siphoning away money instead. This is where it get's tricky, you need to do your research. This might be a good place to start, but there's many out there doing great things that you never hear of. We're going to make another blogpost about this and we'll update you.
7. Get Involved: Participate in your local environmental organization's activities. Attend meetings, join beach cleanups and plant trees. Sitting in a room listening to someone speak at a meeting or picking up trash on the beach might not in itself save the planet, but the people you meet at these events form a community of like minded, motivated people who care and become activists. That's where you'll get organized to attend a rally or protest at the state Capitol and learn how to make a Molotov cocktail... Just kidding!
8. Become Vegan: Wait, wuut?! Oh, this is a tough one. Everyone hates Vegans. Even Vegans hate each other. Q: What's the difference between a Vegan and someone who is on a "plant based diet" ? A: Someone who is on a "plant based diet" still has friends, lol. Seriously though, Vegans have a point. Animal agriculture is the single biggest threat to the planet, not to mention our health, social justice, cause of pandemics, and it's not very nice to animals either. If slaughterhouses had windows, we'd all be Vegans. You can actually meet all your nutritional needs very easily, not just survive but thrive and enjoy delicious satisfying meals everyday and save money on hospital visits and toilet paper on a "plant based diet." Many people try to go half a$$ and still consume dairy or fish, but if you dive into those issues you'll see that dairy is even worse for cows (and your health) and the fishing industry is the single biggest threat to the oceans (and your health). Gotta give up cheese and fish tacos too. Told you this would be spicy!
9. Virtue Signal: Lol, yeah seriously... Reality is all about story telling. We live in a world that's all about marketing and it's turned us all into narcissists. In the age of social media we're all self promoters and people like to do good things and then post about it just to show off. But is that really such a bad thing? The concept has a bad connotation but you have to admit, virtue signaling is better than vice signaling. Our behaviors do in fact, influence other people. You could do beach clean-ups and wear eco- fashion because you want people to think you care about the environment, -or- just because it's a fun party, the clothes are actually comfortable and really cool. Even if our motivation was out of vanity and vanity is such a great motivator, isn't the outcome still doing good?
10. Don't give up! Q: How do you run around the world? A: One step at a time. Though problems may seem impossibly huge, they're always only ever solved with crazy fanatical hope and determination. Small steps eventually add up to great distances. Just keep running! Don't ever stop caring and trying all that you can to make the world a better place... Until that asteroid* comes and ends it all, that's when you can give up.
