Not some cheap plastic shades
Wood sunglasses for sailing? Why knot.

Not some cheap plastic shades

Sailors need the best UV400 polarized seawater resistant lenses for looking up to trim the sails and through the sun's glare to see the reefs. Sunglasses for sailors should also fit comfortably, roll with boat life and be designed to float if they fall overboard.

Before plastic filled the seas, the ships we sailed were made of wood. The things we love on a classic yacht still are. We love wood and it still has a place in our life on the water because it's beautiful, lightweight, durable and it floats.

When the sun and the wind are in your face, quality and performance offshore is non-negotiable. And for the things we need and love at sea — what they're made of matters.

Designed by sailors for sailors
Sea Trials on the Pacific Ocean

Designed by sailors for sailors

Lani Shades was founded by Captain Greg Martin — lifelong sailor, instructor, delivery and charter Captain, sailing the Pacific on his classic 1964 Alberg 35. Captain Greg and the crew of s/v Gemini needed the best polarized floating sunglasses for sailing the bright blue seas around the Hawaiian islands — and they were also concerned about the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans that we love.

Captain Greg and his crew discovered that some things can be made better and more beautifully with materials that respect the planet and the seas we sail. And for something as important as sunglasses, what they're made of matters.

Lani Shades was first certified seaworthy sailing the Trade Winds in the big swells of the Kaiwi channel between O'ahu and Molokai. They continue to be field and float tested every day on land and sea by people all around the world.

Protect your eyes. Love the Sea. Each purchase plants a tree and pulls a pound of plastic out of the ocean with Ecodrive.

Sailing Sunglasses FAQ

Are Lani Shades good for sailing?

Yes. Lani Shades were born on a sailboat, by a sailing instructor, sailing the bright blue seas of Hawaii. Lani Shades sunglasses feature UV400 polarized seawater resistant lenses, lightweight comfortable frames and they float if they fall overboard — features especially useful around boats and open water.

Do Lani Shades really float?

Yes. Lani Shades bamboo and skateboard wood sunglasses styles have all been float tested and chosen for life around the water.

Are the lenses polarized?

Yes. The sailing styles here feature Lani TAC UV400 polarized scratch and seawater resistant lenses.

Can they handle saltwater?

Yes. The lenses include a scratch and seawater-resistant coating. The bamboo and wood frames have been treated with a natural wax coating to protect against prolonged exposure to moisture. As with any quality eyewear exposed to saltwater, rinse them gently with fresh water afterward and dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

What happens if the fit isn't right?

Lani Shades offers a 60-day return guarantee, and the Size Guide can help you choose before ordering.
